Negro History Week was established in 1926 to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass (Feb. 14) and Abraham Lincoln (Feb. 12). In 1976 the observance was expanded and renamed Black History Month.

Best-selling author Eric Jerome Dickey has a nice, clean (if somewhat pokey) Web site devoted to his novels and stories. In addition to a huge excerpt from his most recent book, Between Lovers, Dickey has an extensive guest book, plot summaries of each book and a nice set of links to literature sites, online bookstores and other high-caliber authors. On the down side, the tour page is out of date and it would be nice if there were an excerpt online from each book.

There are audio books, and then there are Recorded Books. Recorded Books, which have been around for more than twenty years, offer only unabridged readings, many of which have been recorded specifically for them by dedicated, trained narrators. As is normal for audio books, these titles are fairly expensive when purchased. Fortunately, most of the recordings are also available for rental, thereby making them comparable in cost to regular print books. The only drawback to the site is that there are only 2,500 titles available.
